"Every life tells a story, no matter how brief"
Welcome to Imperfected Roadkill
Imperfected Roadkill is a small, independent hobby business giving new life to unfortunate roadkill victims.
This website exists not only to showcase our work, but also to honour each life by sharing a piece of their story, however brief it may have been.
We specialise in taxidermy and skeletal articulation, working with both native and non-native Australian wildlife.
Every animal is handled with the utmost care and respect from the moment they come into our care.
Our Story
Most of the animals we source for our work have been found deceased and collected from the side of the road, after a vehicle collision (AKA roadkill). We also sometimes partner with veterinary practices to collect animals who have been humanely euthanised due to medical reasons, or we may find remains on legal grounds.
We do not source animals from anyone other than ourselves, unless specified or for commissioned work.
As most of these animals have passed away due to trauma, they are not perfect. Some could feature a small rib fracture, while others may have multiple life-threatening fractures. Many may feature missing patches of fur or feathers, scars, or deformities. These imperfections are important to us, as they reflect a life once lived.
All specimens come with a label, and for protected species, the label also includes our Taxidermist Licence number. Buyers are required by law to keep this tag attached and must not remove it.
Please see below for information regarding the laws and regulations about the trade of Australian native animals & how to purchase one of our pieces!

AUSTRALIAN NATIVE ANIMALS
You may be questioning the legalities about seeing and being able to purchase preserved native animals on this site, and we hope that you did question this!
We are a licenced taxidermist in NSW Australia, which allows us to work with, showcase, and sell some native animal remains. Under this licence. we must comply with and work under certain regulations, these regulations also require the Buyer (you) to comply with them if wanting to purchase a preserved native animal.
Licence and Licensee Conditions under the Biodiversity Conservation Act 2016:
- Taxidermist Biodiversity Conservation Licence

*Disclaimer: This article has been designed as a user-friendly guide to highlight key requirements when dealing with Australian Native Animals, assisting both Buyers and Licensees in understanding essential regulations. However, it does not replace the full details outlined in the relevant Codes and Acts, which should be carefully reviewed by the Buyer before considering to make a purchase.
NSW BUYERS:
To simplify things, here are the most important rules for the Licensee (us) and the Buyer (you):
- The Licensee AND Buyer are limited to sell/buy up to 5 native animal specimens a year.
*Due to this rule, there may be fewer natives that are available for purchase; the native animal listings may become unavailable if the limit has been reached for that year.
- We can sell a native animal who has been taxidermied/preserved/articulated to a Buyer in NSW who complies with the relevant laws (see below)
- Buyers with a BC Licence: Under your licence you are allowed to purchase a preserved native animal from us. Once you have purchased a specimen, you must record the required details in the Specimen Record and Transaction Form and submit the form before your licence renewal date.
- Buyers without a BC licence: You are allowed to purchase a preserved native animal from us, as long as you comply and register to the Protected Animal Specimens Code of Practice 2023 after purchasing. This registration is completely free! Click here to register to the code.
- Certain bird species are exempted; this means that the Buyer does NOT need a BC Licence or to register with the Code after purchasing. If a bird advertised for sale is exempted, there will be a clear indication explaining so.
BUYERS NOT in NSW:
- Under the BC Licence, we are eligible to sell and export a native specimen to a buyer located in another state. However, depending on the laws and regulations in the other state, that may or may not be possible.
- For all purchases outside of NSW, you will be charged an additional $30 for the Import/Export Licence Fee for native specimens.
Please see further details here: Licences to Transport Native Animals Interstate
*Please note that Import/Export Licences may take up to 28 days to be assessed and processed. We cannot ship the native specimen to you until both permits (ours and yours) have been reviewed and accepted.
- If the buyer is unsure whether they can purchase a preserved native animal from NSW, please get in contact with your state's licencing department to verify.
- As most states require a permit or licence to import/export native animal products, buyers must obtain the necessary import permit from their state before proceeding with the purchase.
ACT:
- Buyer requires a licence for native or non-exempted specimens "A licence is required to keep any native or non-exempt animal or the parts of such an animal. This includes taking, keeping, selling or importing animal parts for taxidermy, and using animal parts for art or craft purposes."
- IMPORTING: Buyer requires a licence for importing a non-exempted specimen
